Welcome! We are so glad that you have bookmarked your page to stop for a moment to share your favorite books or authors with librarians in the Southeastern Massachusetts area. This blog was created for SEMLS teacher and public librarians who not only love to read but understand that reading for fun is the best way to encourage young readers to increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Reading for the fun of it is the best method for promoting life-long readers. And in the spirit of involuntary reading there will be no reading assignments, tests or quizzes. Here you will find book reviews, booktalking strategies and ideas for promoting books in school classrooms, afterschool programs and in the public library. Although, if SEMLS members would like to post articles, studies or books that support reading, you are more than welcome to do so. One never knows when valid research is needed to make your case in demonstrating the power of reading to school administrators, library trustees and the media.

It's been said that word-of-mouth advertising is one of the best marketing tools in promotion. If that's the case, then let's book it and talk it up!

Hi,
Our Mother Daughter Book Discussion Group in Wareham just finished reading Princess Academy by Shannon Hale which was a Newbery Honor Book this year. The girls, most in grades 6 & 7 really liked it. This group is usually hard to please and they are fantasy freaks. I wasn't sure there was enough of the fantasy element to hold their attention, but the storyline was definitely appealing to them.

As a librarian I enjoyed the aspect of the ability of reading and education to empower and change lives, not only the girls' lives but of the entire village.

The exploration of friendship and courage was also dealt with but in a nice subtle way.

I would highly recommend this a a good title for a mother daughter book discussion group.
